SMILES (Simplifying Mental Illness plus Life Enhancement Skills)

Description

For 8-12 year old young people who have a mother, father, brother or sister experiencing a mental health problem. (Specifically schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression or anxiety).


FOUNDATIONS - Education for families & carers of people with mental health problems

Description

Foundations is a FREE two-day education course run by Carers NSW for friends, families and carers of people with mental health problems.

Foundations will enable carers to meet others in similar situations, learn more about mental illness and the mental health system, learn how to enhance their coping skills, how to access local services and much more all within a safe and supportive environment.


New Carer Representation Workshops in 2010

Description

Carers NSW is running another round of two day workshops for carers interested in joining our Carer Representation Program. Workshops will be held in Sydney and in regional NSW.

The Carer Representation Program provides carers from across NSW with opportunities to participate in activities such as guest speaking, media interviews, and representation on committees and roundtables. The aim is to inform a range of professionals and general members of the community of carers’ perspectives.

Carers who are interested in the program will need to fill out an Expression of Interest form. No prior experience is needed as Carers NSW will provide you with training and support, although a passion for getting the carers’ perspective heard is a must.

Working With Carers Training Package (DADHC)

Bipolar study

Description

The University of New South Wales and the Black Dog Institute are investigating what types of behaviours and experiences trigger the highs and lows in young people (aged 18-24 years) with bipolar disorder.

If you care for a young person with bi-polar disorder and think they might be interested in sharing their experiences of what triggers their highs and lows, please advise them of this study.

Volunteers needed for osteoarthritis trial

Description

volunteers are needed for a trial to investigate chiropractic management of osteoarthritis of the hip. The trial is being conducted by Macquarie University’s Department of Health & Chiropractic and volunteers will be given FREE standard chiropractic treatment.

You can take part in the trial if:
1. You have daily hip pain or stiffness for longer than 60 minutes
2. You can attend a physical assessment in Eastwood, Macquarie Park or Summer Hill and an independent radiographic diagnostic session.

Where the trial will take place at one of Macquarie University’s three chiropractic outpatient clinics in Eastwood, Macquarie Park or Summer Hill.

When

volunteers are required immediately. The study will be conducted over an initial one month treatment period, with six optional additional treatments. Follow-up visits are required at three, six and nine month intervals.

Living well with Bipolar

Description

A six week online course, developed and run by Madeleine Kelly, author of Life on a Roller-coaster. Lessons, readings, activities and forums are all part of the course which looks at how to live well with and manage Bipolar. This course is open to sufferes of mental illness as well as carers, family, friends and service providers.

When: The course’s intake dates are the 1st and 15th of every month. Payment must be made prior to enrolment.

Autism workshops for parents and professionals

Description

Professor Tony Attwood, a world expert on Autism Spectrum Disorders, will speak on a range of topics and offer information and advice on Autism Spectrum Disorders.

There are two sessions:

  • On Thursday 18 March 2010, Professor Attwood will talk about Adolescent Issues for Teenagers (covering a wide range of aspects including puberty, the development of sexuality, academic expectations and self-esteem) and Strategies to Reduce Being Bullied and Teased.
  • On Friday 19 March 2010, Professor Attwood will talk about Managing Challenging Behaviour in children with ASD and The origins of Special Interests and Constructive Strategies.

Arts Activated Conference

Description

The Arts Activated Conference is an opportunity for people passionate about the arts and disability sectors to explore, debate, discuss and connect ideas and practice.

The 2010 theme is ‘Arts, Access, Excellence’, and the keynote speaker is prestigious UK artist Jenny Sealey. Up to 300 delegates are expected to attend, including artists with and without a disability, arts workers, policy makers, festival organisers and volunteers and cultural development officers.

The conference is being organised by Accessible Arts, the peak arts and disability organisation in NSW.

Carers Weekend Away

Description

Sponsored by St. George Home Care, the Carers Weekend Away is an opportunity for carers to take a break from their responsibilities and relax in an atmosphere of support and friendship.

Carers of a family member or friend with a disability, dementia, mental health issues or problems of frail age may be eligible to attend. Places are limited and will be allocated according to strict selection criteria. Preference will be given to carers who have been unable to take a break for some time and live in the St. George area.

Challenging Serious Behaviours Collaboratively  - Workshop for carers of children with challenging behaviour

Description

Brief Therapy Solutions and Community Links Wollondilly are collaborating to provide a series of 8 free sessions designed for the carers of children with challenging behaviour, particularly those suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Conduct Disorder or Reactive Attachment Disorder.

The sessions will explore the relationship between child development and challenging behaviour, learning disabilities, and strategies to manage behaviour and reduce outbursts.

Free workshops for parents/carers of school aged children with autism

Description

The Positive Partnerships workshops are an Australian Department of Education Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) funded component of the Australian Government’s “Helping Children with Autism” package.
They are run nationally by the Australian Autism Education & Training Consortium (AAETC). Members of the AAETC include Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect), the lead agency, the University of Canberra, Autism SA and the Department of Education and Training, Western Australia.

The workshop is highly interactive and focuses on helping parents and primary care givers of children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) to work in partnership with their child's school to improve their learning outcomes. The content is adapted to the different ages, educational settings and specific needs of students with ASD, including elective specific information sessions.

Free health information sessions for seniors and their carers

Description

NSW Seniors Peer Education Centre (NSW SPEC) provides free health information sessions relevant to the needs of seniors and their carers. They are now taking bookings for their free service between now and June 2010, dependent on on-going funding being received. All talks are presented by a fully trained volunteer peer educator, also a senior, and are accompanied by informative handouts, also free. Target groups are:

  • Seniors groups and clubs
  • Carer support groups for individuals caring for an older person
  • Volunteers in contact with seniors
  • Seniors living in retirement villages
  • Support groups for older people caring for another (spouse, grandchild, dependant adult offspring)

NSW Seniors Peer Education Centre is a program offered by Council on the Ageing NSW and is funded by the National Prescribing Service to deliver its talk on the Quality Use of Medicines and by beyondblue: the national depression initiative for Beyond Maturity Blues.

Mentoring Program for carers of people with acquired brain injuries

Description

The Brain Injury Association of NSW CarerLink Mentoring Program partners people with experience of caring for someone with an acquired brain injury (mentor) with another person recently exposed to the experience (mentee).

The program has been found to be an effective buffer for stress and has also been shown to increase people’s sense or personal empowerment and efficacy.

This is a free program which provides training for mentors and ongoing guidance and support for mentors and mentees.

Description

New respite service for carers of people with mental illness – Nepean region

Description

Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association (PRA) in Penrith has funding to provide respite to carers of adults with a mental illness in the Nepean, St Mary’s, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains’ areas. We are funded by the Department of Health & Ageing and the Department of Family & Community Services & Indigenous Affairs. Therefore there are no costs involved.
