Carers NSW research

Contributing to carer research is an important part of our role as a peak body representing carers’ needs and interests. Research helps inform our policy and advocacy activities and strengthens our knowledge base about carers and the issues that affect them.

Key research activities

Carers NSW Report

r Respite research

Carers NSW conducted a study in 2006 into the current range of respite options, and whether these options meet the support needs of carers. The research report, Respite reconsidered: a discussion of key issues and future directions for carer respite, documents the outcomes and provides recommendations on how to improve the respite system to enhance outcomes for carers, those they support and the community care system as a whole.

r Male carers’ research

Recognising the need to increase its knowledge of male carers, Carers NSW initiated a study of this group in 2005. As previous research indicated that caring often has a negative impact on carers’ emotional wellbeing and on their social lives and contacts, the study concentrated on the social and emotional circumstances of caring as they relate to male carers.
This unique study looks at the emotional issues faced by male carers, how they cope with caring, and the size and level of satisfaction with their social networks. It also considers male carers' mental health, use of and satisfaction with support groups and how community attitudes to caring impact upon them. r Carers News survey report

The biannual survey of Carers NSW members, distributed through our newsletter, Carers News, gathers information about carers to inform and support the direction of Carers NSW policy work. It is a key aspect of our research that ensures our policy work is responsive to carers’ needs and current issues. Click the link to view the "Carers News 2004 survey report".

r Carer Life Course Framework

The Carer Life Course Framework was developed by Deanna Pagnini as part of the Carers Mental Health Project, a three-year project undertaken by Carers NSW to enhance carers’ wellbeing and reduce the negative impacts of caring for people with a mental illness or disorder.

Funded by NSW Health through the Centre for Mental Health, the project focused on the direct provision of training, support and counselling to carers; the development and delivery of training to mental health professionals; general counselling agencies and telephone support agencies; and building the capacities of other organisations to deliver services.
