Caring Across Cultures

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) Carer Program

Working with many indigenous communities across NSW to raise awareness about carer issues and encourage better service support, remains our key community development strategy. An ATSI perspective in the planning and implementation of project work, training, policy development and direct service work being undertaken across the organisation is integral to our practice. A cross-unit ATSI working party and an ATSI Carer Advisory group with representation from the five ATSI regions across NSW have been implemented.

Multicultural Carer Support and Development

Our Multicultural Development Officer is widely consulted about her knowledge and understanding of multicultural carer support from both within the organisation and outside Carers NSW.

Achievements include:

• Adapting carer education and training programs for different language and cultural groups within the Carers Mental Health project
• Research report on the Multicultural Carer Profile Project
• Establishing a cross-unit Carers NSW multicultural working party
• Assisting with the facilitation of the Multicultural Carer Alliance (comprising key CALDB government and non-government organisations). Their current project is a campaign to find 'hidden carers'.
