2006 Census of Population and Housing

The 2006 Census of Population and Housing, conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), collected information on unpaid care for the first time in an Australian Census. This enables access to local area data on carers. Data was also collected on the need for assistance.

Census estimates on the number of carers in NSW and Australia are lower than the estimates made in the ABS Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers. Carers NSW notes that this is likely to be the result of the different survey methodologies and highlights the ‘hidden’ nature of caring, meaning that many carers do not identify as carers.

To access Census data visit the ABS website to select the ABS Census product you would like to use. For more information on how to use these products please contact the ABS www.abs.gov.au
